Cook sugar, syrup and water until it forms a hard ball when a small test amount is dropped into water. Beat egg whites until stiff. While continuing to beat egg whites, very slowly add the sugar mixture and continue beating until stiff. Add nuts and vanilla. Pour into buttered pan and cool.
