Dutch Apple Cake

2 c. flour                                1 tsp. salt

1/4 c. sugar                              1 egg

4 tsp. baking powder                     4 tbsp. shortening

4-6 tbsp. milk                            8-10 apples, peeled

2 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 c. sugar


Sift all dry ingredients together. Work in shortening with finger-tips. Beat egg with milk and stir into dry mixture. Spread out flat in greased 9x13" pan - about one-half inch thick. Cover surface with wedge shaped apple slices. Sprinkle generously with mixture of cinnamon and sugar, and dot with butter. Bake in hot oven 375 deg. for 20-30 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla or lemon sauce.
